Who We Are?
Our Story
The Kakamega Forest Heritage Foundation (KFHF) was established in 2015 to protect and restore Kakamega Forest—Kenya’s last remnant of the vast Guinea-Congo Basin rainforest. This forest, once part of an ecosystem that spanned from Cameroon to Kenya, is under threat from deforestation and encroachment, endangering its rich biodiversity and the livelihoods it sustains.
KFHF unites Friends of the Kakamega Forest Ecosystem to collaborate with governmental and non-governmental organizations, working to preserve the forest’s unique biodiversity, including endangered primates, rare bird species, and hardwood trees like the Elgon Teak. We believe in a holistic approach that values the forest as both an ecological treasure and a source of cultural and economic support for surrounding communities.
Through our tree planting, wildlife protection, and community-driven programs, we empower locals to become stewards of the forest. By involving them in conservation decisions, we foster sustainable practices that benefit both people and nature. Our vision is a thriving forest that provides clean air, fresh water, and a stable climate for future generations, ensuring that Kakamega Forest remains a source of life, culture, and prosperity.
