A Commitment to Conservation and Community
Since its inception in 2015, the Kakamega Forest Heritage Foundation (KFHF) has been at the forefront of conservation efforts in Kenya, dedicated to restoring and protecting the endangered Kakamega Forest. Our mission extends beyond environmental stewardship; it encompasses a deep commitment to empowering the communities that depend on this vital ecosystem. Through our two primary initiatives—The Conservation Fund and The Empowerment Fund—we work tirelessly to create sustainable solutions that benefit both the forest and its surrounding communities.
Our story: Bridging Nature and Community
Founded in 2015 under The Companies Act (Chapter 486 of the Laws of Kenya), the Kakamega Forest Heritage Foundation (KFHF) represents a vibrant and well-organized philanthropic effort dedicated to restoring and conserving the Kakamega Forest—Kenya’s last remnant of the expansive Guinea-Congo Basin rain forest. Once a thriving ecosystem stretching from Cameroon to Kenya, the Kakamega Forest has faced significant threats from deforestation and encroachment, leading to alarming declines in its rich biodiversity.
KFHF unites as Friends of the Kakamega Forest Ecosystem, collaborating closely with governmental and non-governmental entities to combat these challenges. Our mission centers on the dual goals of ecological preservation and sustainable development, empowering local communities to engage in practices that enhance both environmental stewardship and economic resilience. Through our initiatives, we strive to safeguard the forest’s unique biodiversity, which includes endangered primate species, a variety of butterflies and birds, and rare flora like Elgon Teak hardwood.
The Kakamega Forest is not only a vital ecological asset but also a cultural treasure. It sustains the livelihoods of neighboring communities, fostering traditional practices and supporting local tourism. Recognizing the interconnectedness of nature and community, KFHF aims to nurture a holistic approach to conservation—one that acknowledges the ecological, social, and economic benefits of maintaining this irreplaceable habitat.
We implement systematic programs that focus on tree planting, wildlife protection, and community engagement. By involving local stakeholders in decision-making processes and conservation activities, we empower them to take ownership of the forest’s health and sustainability. Our ultimate vision is to create a thriving ecosystem that continues to provide clean air, fresh water, and climate stability for future generations.
At KFHF, we believe that the health of the Kakamega Forest is intrinsically linked to the well-being of the local communities. Our story is one of collaboration and hope, where every tree planted and every child supported contributes to a brighter future for all.
Tree Planting Day is one of our flagship initiatives under the Conservation Fund, bringing together diverse stakeholders—corporate partners, government officials, local communities, and students—to plant indigenous trees in the forest. Each year, we strive to not only increase the forest’s biodiversity but also foster a sense of community ownership and responsibility towards this precious resource.
Kakamega Forest Heritage Foundation 2023 Tree Planting Day
On June 2, 2023, KFHF hosted its annual Tree Planting Day at the Iloro area of Kakamega Forest, an event that exemplified our collaborative spirit. The day was graced by distinguished guests, including:
- Cabinet Secretary for Health: Hon. Susan Nakhumicha
- Kakamega County Women Representative: Hon. Elsie Muhanda
- Local leaders and representatives from various organizations, including the Kenya Defense Force, Co-operative Bank of Kenya, and Kenya Wildlife Services.
Together, we planted 10,000 indigenous tree seedlings, reinforcing our commitment to restoring the forest and addressing the pressing challenges of climate change and biodiversity loss. Our partners have adopted areas of the forest for reforestation, demonstrating their commitment to environmental sustainability. Their support has been instrumental in achieving our goals.
Kakamega Forest Heritage Foundation 2024 Tree Planting Day
The 2024 tree planting initiative, held on June 7th, marked another milestone in the Foundation’s continuous conservation efforts. Led by KFHF Chairman Dr. Johnson Murila, the event saw enthusiastic participation from representatives of various institutions and students from multiple schools. Together, they successfully planted 9,500 seedlings across 20 acres of the forest. This remarkable achievement further reinforces the Foundation’s commitment to restoring and sustaining Kakamega Forest.
Building on the successes of previous years, KFHF has successfully planted over 112,000 indigenous tree seedlings across 140 acres of deforested land within the Kakamega Forest. This significant milestone highlights the Foundation’s steadfast dedication and the collaborative efforts of its partners to restore and rejuvenate this crucial ecosystem to its natural state.
These achievements not only underscore the dedication of KFHF and its supporters but also emphasize the importance of sustained efforts to protect and rejuvenate Kakamega Forest, setting the stage for the launch of the empowerment fund to support local communities and further conservation initiatives.
Local Communities and The Rainforest
Our commitment to conservation is paralleled by our efforts to empower vulnerable communities. Through our Empowerment Fund, we support initiatives that uplift children and families, particularly those in need. By conducting regular visits and donations to children’s homes, we foster connections that inspire hope and resilience.
For instance, on June 8, 2024, we visited Ushindi Children’s Home and the Precious Virginia Community Empowerment Center, which supports children with cerebral palsy. These visits not only provided essential supplies but also created moments of joy and connection, reminding us of the power of community support.
